Cedars Woodworking has had the privilege of working with local historic property owners to restore their historic buildings to their original state. Two iconic Lancaster buildings boast restored millwork by Cedars Woodworking – The W.W. Griest Building, and the Maple Grove Mill.

The W.W. Griest Building

Cedars Woodworking replaces millwork on historic buildings. The W.W. Griest Building is named after William Walton Griest, a former Pennsylvania representative, and is the second tallest building in Lancaster City. The Griest Building was designed by Lancaster Architect C. Emlen Urban and built in 1924. The Griest Building is of the Italian Renaissance Revival style, and is steel framed, and faced in granite, limestone, and terra cotta. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._W._Griest_Building )

Cedars Woodworking was pleased to assist with replacing the mill work on this building’s entrance, identical to the original.

The Maple Grove Mill

Cedars Woodworking duplicates original mill work for historic buildings. Situated along Little Conestoga Creek, Maple Grove Mill is the oldest gristmill in Lancaster County. The original log mill, built by Hans Brubaker in the early 1700s, was destroyed by fire. The current 248-year-old structure was built in 1767 by Johannes and Barbara S. Steiner, who also built the nearby Abbeyville Mansion. In 2005, the mill fell victim to fire, leaving the structure gutted and roofless. Over the course of several years, the exterior of the mill was restored to its former glory. The mill is built where modern day Columbia Avenue crosses over the Little Conestoga Creek. Cedars Woodworking created new woodwork for this historic mill. Each window is a unique size, built using mortise and tenon, produced from long-lasting Spanish cedar, and painted for durability. We like to say “anything red” on this building was produced by Cedars Woodworking.

Our passion for remaining true to history is just one thing that sets Cedars Woodworking apart. Historic restoration in Lancaster PA is just one of the many services we offer.
